Cape Mentelle is an iconic Margaret River wine producer. Here in the south-west corner of Australia, and one of the world’s most remote wine regions, you can rest on a white sand dune with the Australian continent at your back and the Indian Ocean stretching to the western horizon, and enjoy some of the best wine you’ll ever taste. The maritime climate with a long, dry growing season tempered by sea breezes is perfect for viticulture, providing consistently excellent quality from vintage to vintage.
As one of Margaret River’s ‘founding five’ wineries, Cape Mentelle pioneered many of the region’s renowned wine styles. Awards, including consecutive wins of Australia’s most prestigious wine trophy with the iconic cabernet sauvignon in 1983 and 1984, helped to put Margaret River on the map. Today Cape Mentelle is a benchmark for the quality of the region’s wines. Building on the winery’s tradition of pioneering spirit and uncompromising commitment to excellence,an innovative young team is taking up the challenge to be simply the best.
The winery takes its name from the nearby Cape, named by the French ‘Baudin expedition’ which charted the coast of Western Australia in 1801. They named the Cape after two notable French scientists, geographer Edmund and his cartographer brother Francois-Simon Mentelle, who lived in Paris in the early 1700s.
The surf conditions aren’t the only elements that define the seasons here. Life at the winery follows the annual cycles of grape growth and wine production against the backdrop of the rhythms of the stunning natural environment - rugged coastline, pristine beaches, protected bays with crystal clear water and majestic forests.
Cape Mentelle has over 200 hectares of its own vines across four vineyards. Primary plantings are cabernet sauvignon, semillon and sauvignon blanc, with smaller amounts of shiraz, zinfandel, merlot and chardonnay. More recently viognier, marsanne, roussanne and sangiovese have been added. Contract-grown fruit is sourced from a number of local producers, some of whom have had a relationship with Cape Mentelle over many years. Great care is taken to make sure these grapes match Cape Mentelle’s quality and have similar regional character.
