A pioneer in the Australian sparkling wine industry, renowned champagne house Moët & Chandon established Domaine Chandon Australia in 1986 to produce sparkling wine of the highest quality, using the classic grape varieties of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Chandon quickly established itself as the leading super premium vintage sparkling wine brand in Australia, and continues to this day as one of the domestic sparkling wine market leaders.

Located only one hour from Melbourne, the Chandon ‘Green Point’ winery and vineyard are in the premium quality Yarra Valley sub-region of Victoria. The  Green Point Winery site is so-named by early settlers in the 1860s, who observed that this location remained greener longer into summer than any other area in the Yarra Valley. The Victorian region is influenced by the weather patterns which sweep in from the very cold Great Southern Ocean and the Great Dividing Range which runs down the east coast of Australia. The altitude differences provided by the valleys and the slopes modify the cool weather patterns, creating a range of outstanding viticultural sites. In cooler climates, grapes ripen slowly optimizing the expression of varietal flavour and aroma and producing wines with structural elegance and finesse.

Hidden within Victoria are some viticultural gems, where a varietal expresses itself with unique clarity and vibrancy. This is the marriage we seek for Domaine Chandon still wines. The unique breadth of cool climate sites found in Victoria’s high countries and valleys provides the diversity which lies at the heart of the complexity we achieve in our wines. Two critical factors influence the cool climate regions of Victoria. The first is the cold weather patterns that sweep in from the Great Southern Ocean. The second is the Great Dividing Range, cutting through Victoria and creating mountainous and hilly terrain across more than a third of the state. The combination of these factors offers many outstanding sites for cool climate viticulture. The influence of climate is critical in allowing the Chandon winemaking team to select grapes that provide elegant structure, and vibrant varietal expression for our still wines.

Today the winemaking team work with over thirty independent growers, in addition to Chandon’s own Green Point and Strathbogie vineyards, to provide the diversity of fruit we require for our wines. During the growing season Chandon’s viticulturists and winemakers visit our many growers to assess progress in the vineyard, monitor the ripening of the grapes and select the perfect moment to harvest. Many of our growers have been part of the Chandon family since our foundation and we’re proud of the strong partnerships we have developed over the years.
