In 1985 a group of Australian wine experts set out to find an ideal site for growing traditional cool climate Champagne grape varieties on behalf of Moët and Chandon. Nestling in the Yarra Valley, they found an old dairy farm named ‘Green Point’ with the perfect combination of cool climate and great soil.
Since 1986 this has been the site of Domaine Chandon. In the early 1990’s the Chandon winemaking team began producing small quantities of chardonnay and pinot noir varietal still wines using grapes sourced from some of the exceptional Victorian vineyards suppling fruit for Chandon sparkling wines. These wines were sold through the Domaine Chandon visitor centre where they were exceptionally well received.
Realising the potential of the viticultural areas they were exploring and the quality of the wines being made, the winemaking team expanded the still wine range in the late 1990’s. The wines captured the same complexity, elegance and authenticity found in Chandon’s groundbreaking sparkling wines and were commercially released in Australia and overseas under the Green Point label.
Over the last fifteen years the winemaking team has refined the still wine range produced at Domaine Chandon, selecting cool climate vineyard sites ideally suited to each variety and perfecting their style of elegant, expressive Victorian wines.
Excellent cool-climate vineyard selection, individual handling of fruit parcels and ‘hands on’ winemaking are the cornerstones of the Chandon still wine philosophy with each wine exuding elegance, varietal expression and its unique Victorian regional origins.
