During vintage winemakers make numerous vineyard inspections to ensure that the fruit identified for the Richmond Grove Weathervane Cabernet Merlot retained freshness of fruit character and was harvested at optimum ripeness.
Lively and fresh, the palate shows concentrated fruit with blackberry and blackcurrant flavours, supported by well integrated oak. The mid palate is supple and leads to a long finish featuring fine grained tannins. Purity of varietal character is paramount in the Richmond Grove Weathervane Cabernet Merlot. It shows all the attractive seductive properties of Cabernet Sauvignon without any harshness. The Merlot adds fleshiness in the mid palate making for a very satisfying drink with great length of flavour
Prior to harvest, Chardonnay blocks destined for Richmond Grove French Cask Chardonnay are visited regularly by winemakers and viticulturists. This is to ensure fruit that is showing intense, varietal flavours is harvested at optimum maturity. This requires carefully balancing of sugar ripeness and flavour development.
As this wine is labelled French Cask Chardonnay the use of French oak for maturation is required. The skill of the Winemaker is to ensure that the purity of the varietal flavours are enhanced and supported without any masking or domination of the oak flavours. This wine exhibits and delivers on this design enabling the wine to be drunk young or to age gracefully for several years.
The selected vineyards were machine harvested and delivered to the winery in the cool of the early morning. The fruit was then crushed and de-stemmed into static fermenters and inoculated with neutral wine yeast to maintain varietal fruit characters.
The individual parcels of wine were matured for twelve to fifteen months in one and two year old French and American oak barrels, before they were combined and the final blend prepared for bottling.
Winemakers made regular visits to the vineyards throughout the ripening process. Only those vineyards displaying all the regional and varietal hallmarks of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon were nominated for inclusion in this blend. The parcels of fruit were machine harvested and delivered to the winery. The fruit from each individual vineyard was kept separate, in order to retain vineyard identity and to provide blending options at a later stage during wine making.
Classic Coonawarra regional characters extend to the palate, with vibrant cassis flavours well integrated with fine and persistent fruit tannins, which provide length and structure.
The classic Australian Riesling styles are produced by grapes sourced from the Clare Valley, specifically the microclimate of Watervale. The vines selected for Richmond Grove Watervale Riesling display intense regional and varietal characteristics and are typically sourced from older vine plantings. Red brown earths over limestone subsoil and the hilly topography of the region result in the classic grape flavours, predominantly from the slopes exposed to the cooling breeze of the southwest during the evening.
Mature old vine Barossa Shiraz vineyards located in the sub regions of Rowland Flat, Gomersal, Nuriootpa and Stonewell were selected as the grape source for this wine with complexity, strong regional character and depth of flavour being the key criteria.
