English immigrant Edward Tyrrell established Tyrrell’s Wines in 1858 in the lee of the Hunter Valley’s Brokenback Range, New South Wales. This land has become recognised as home to some of the Hunter Valley regions finest vineyards, and the basis for development of one of Australia’s most successful privately owned wine companies.

At Tyrrell’s Hunter Valley Vineyard, the beginnings of five generations of winemaking can be traced to the unassuming one-roomed hut. The hut of ironbark slabs was founder Edward Tyrrell’s home. Built by hand in 1858 and progressively surrounded by grape vines, the site marks the birthplace of one of Australia’s great wine dynasties. At the Hunter Valley Wine Industry Awards 2009, Tyrrell’s Old Hut was honoured with ‘The Heritage Award’, a new award in 2009 introduced to acknowledge landmarks or items of historical importance that have influenced the course of or made a significant contribution to the Hunter Valley Wine Industry. The motto of ‘nothing is great unless it is good’ began with Edward Tyrrell and has been a guiding beacon for the family for more than 150 years.

Tyrrell’s Wines have passed many milestones along the way. The introduction of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to the modern Australian industry, the expansion outside the Hunter Valley to McLaren Vale, Limestone Coast and Heathcote, and the championing of the Semillon variety from the Hunter are just some of these outstanding achievements.

Today, Tyrrell’s are a truly national wine company, premium vineyards extend from their legendary home in the Hunter Valley to other distinguished grape growing regions of Australia including McLaren Vale in South Australia and Heathcote in Victoria. Tyrrell's Wines the has celebrated an amazing 12 months after being named “the Australian Winery of the Year” by two highly regarded Australian wine publications - the highly acclaimed Big Red Wine Book by wine writers Campbell Mattinson and Gary Walsh and James Halliday’s 2010 Wine Companion. James Halliday, Australia's pre eminent wine writer and author of over 40 wine books, tasted over 50,000 wines during the past 12 months before awarding Tyrrell's the highly sought after Winery Of The Year award. Fourth generation family member and Managing Director, Bruce Tyrrell heads this winemaking company. At the Hunter Valley Wine Industry Awards 2009, Bruce Tyrrell was honoured with the Hunter Valley Living Legend award. This prestigious award recognises and honours those who have made major contributions and excelled within the Hunter Valley winemaking industry.

In 2006, Bruce Tyrrell was also recognised with an Order of Australia medal for his contribution to the Australian wine industry, improving grape quality, tourism and export opportunities. Tyrrell’s Wines boasts well established, popular and highly recognisable wine brands that are exported to over 30 countries worldwide. The fifth generation of the Tyrrell family, are now involved in the family business, illustrating that this iconic Hunter Valley winery will continue to be Australian and family owned well into the future.
