Established as a hobby by Ballarat businessman Ian Home, the Yellowglen vineyard at Smythesdale was originally planted with red grape varieties destined for table wine.

The name Yellowglen was given to the winery after a gold mine was discovered in the middle of what are now Pinot Noir vineyards. It soon became clear that this cool climate area would be far better suited to the production of world class sparkling wine. Sparkling wine was made for the first time at Yellowglen.

In 1989 the first Yellowglen Vintage wine was released. It was made from the 1987 vintage and it has gained a reputation as being one of Australia's finest single vintage sparkling wines. In 1996 Yellowglen Yellow Sparkling was successfully launched, becoming an instant success.

And in the 2000's, Yellowglen reaffirms its position as leader in sparkling with the launch of the exciting new innovations, such as Jewel Yellow and Jewel Pink - Australia's first ever dedicated lower calorie, lower alcohol sparkling wines.
