Launched in 1962, Penfolds Bin 128 is a regional wine that reflects the unique climate and growing conditions of South Australia's Coonawarra district and the elegant style of coolclimate Shiraz. From the 1980 vintage, French oak replaced American, highlighting the pepper-and-spice characteristics that define this style. Since the mid-1980s greater attention has been paid to fruit ripeness, resulting in a wine that is fuller in style and structure.
Coonawarra received rainfall at the right time during the growing season and also benefited from moderate temperatures. Each rainfall invigorated the vines and maintained canopy health. Mild temperatures throughout February and March allowed the fruit to develop desirable flavours whilst retaining acid before warmer temperatures in April culminated in a successful vintage.
Named after Grange Cottage, built in 1945, at Magill Estate and itself named for Mary Penfold's family home in England. Labelled Grange Hermitage until the 1989 vintage, Grange since the 1990 vintage. Made at Magill until 1973, Nuriootpa, Barossa Valley until 2000 and partly returned to Magill for the 2002 vintage. Packaged in laser-etched bottles with identification numbers since the 1994 vintage.
By international benchmark standards, Penfolds Grange has everything required of a great red wine: complexity, richness, balance and longevity. Representing the pinnacle of the Penfolds red wine range, the 1991 Grange is one of the finest red wines made in Australia and displays lifted classic Grange character, perhaps more so than the highly acclaimed 1990.
Grange is the benchmark by which all other reds in this country, and increasingly overseas, are often measured. The reasons for this are many yet straightforward. Concentration of flavour, complexity and longevity - Grange blossoms with 15 to 20 years of bottle age, when most other reds have past their best, and better vintages can live and continue developing for decades longer. And finally, heritage - first produced by Max Schubert in 1951, the '94 Grange represents over 40 years of winemaking excellence.
Grange is the benchmark by which other Australian reds are often measured. Grange is decadently rich with layer upon layer of flavor that coats the tongue and generously lingers minutes after swallowing. Abundant aromas leap from a glass of Grange and defy the typical adjectives used by wine tasters. These are hedonistic aromas of rich, ripe fruits and spice, yet with an 'otherness' of which wine tasters speak of in hushed tones. Grange blossoms with 15 to 20 years of bottle age and better vintages can live and continue developing for decades. First produced by Max Schubert in 1951, the '96 Grange represents 46 years of winemaking excellence.
Penfolds Grange displays fully ripe, intensely flavoured and textured Shiraz grapes in combination with new American oak. The result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as the most consistent of the world's great wines. The Grange style is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds' multivineyard, multi-district blending philosophy.
Grange is both Penfolds and Australia's most famous wine and is officially listed as a heritage icon of South Australia. Grange boasts an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951 and clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climate of South Australia. The majority of the shiraz was grown on Cape Mentelle Estate Vineyards located in the Wallcliffe and Karridale subregions, within the Margaret River appellation. The soil of these vineyards is derived from decomposed granite and consists of a gravelly loam over a deep clay subsoil. All vines are vertically shoot positioned and managed to ensure balanced growth during the season.
This delicious, ground-breaking blended wine from viticultural regions on opposite sides of the country owes its silky texture to Mudgee and ethereal shiraz aromas to Frankland River. Elegant and stylish, it drinks well throughout all seasons.
The grapes were harvested from the Acacia Ridge Vineyard in Frankland River and the Oatley family’s Wooloomooloo Vineyard in northern Mudgee. The two wines were made separately according to traditional winemaking practices and blended after fermentation then matured in French oak barrels for about 15 months before bottling at the family’s Mudgee winery
During the growing season of late 2008, McLaren Vale experienced cooler than average weather conditions with some timely rainfall in late December. Cool, dry weather continued into the new year providing excellent conditions for vine health and flavour development. The heatwave of late January/early February accelerated the ripening of certain varieties such as shiraz but the cooler conditions that followed in February meant later ripening varieties such as cabernet sauvignon and malbec had more ideal conditions.
In 1890 John Riddoch founded Coonawarra, the history of which is inextricably entwined with the Riddoch and Rymill families.
His grandson, John Riddoch Rymill, was a distinguished polar explorer, whose son Peter and his wife Judy, both farmers and keen equestrians, established the Rymill Coonawarra Winery in 1990.
