Launched in 1962, Penfolds Bin 128 is a regional wine that reflects the unique climate and growing conditions of South Australia's Coonawarra district and the elegant style of coolclimate Shiraz. From the 1980 vintage, French oak replaced American, highlighting the pepper-and-spice characteristics that define this style. Since the mid-1980s greater attention has been paid to fruit ripeness, resulting in a wine that is fuller in style and structure.
Coonawarra received rainfall at the right time during the growing season and also benefited from moderate temperatures. Each rainfall invigorated the vines and maintained canopy health. Mild temperatures throughout February and March allowed the fruit to develop desirable flavours whilst retaining acid before warmer temperatures in April culminated in a successful vintage.
Tamar Valley is near Launceston in Northern Tasmania. Heemskerk was an integral player in developing Tasmania's wine industry, long before the island reached its current state of popularity. Graham Wiltshire established the Heemskerk vineyard in 1975 and today the label looks a little further afield, making wines that reflect some of Tasmania's best vineyard sites.
A Medium core with a bright purple rim. Rustic and classic with bright red cherry aromas, cinnamon spice, delicate florals and subtle soy lying underneath. Structural and grippy with firm dusty tannins, cherry stone texture and talcum-like acidity. Subtle oak influence sits in the background giving the wine freshness, lift and depth of flavour.
The Kooyong Farrago Chardonnay was whole bunch pressed and barrel fermented naturally without inoculation. Matured for 12 months in French oak (30% new).
Pale straw colour,Tight and bright, with crisp lemon and grapefruit notes on the nose. On the palate there is a very attractive tension to the wine, with a seam of crisp acid, and a range of restrained fruit and minerally flavours. River pebbles, cumquat, bay leaves, white peach, green apples, and honeydew melon are a few that come to mind, and there is just a touch of creaminess to the mid-palate that offsets the tautness. A very strong and pure expression of Farrago.
VINEYARD – Sourced from the Short Flat and Johnno’s vineyards, dating back to 1908. Dry grown and on their own roots. SOIL – Alluvial sandy loam over limestone
VINTAGE CONDITIONS – A dry winter and spring with some rain through mid to late December that filled out the bunches, which was followed by a dry harvesting period that gave us a smaller crop than 2004 but with more concentrated flavours.
Vibrant, deep ruby red colour. A bouquet with concentrated aromas of blackberries and plums accompanied by distinctive eucalyptus, clove and spicy black pepper, supported by integrated charry vanilla oak. The palate is Full-bodied, with ripe plum and dark berry flavours providing richly focused fruit sweetness on the mid palate. More savoury nuances of black olives and dried herbs evolve with time in the glass. The luscious fruit textures are supported by well integrated and balanced oak tannins. A soundly structured wine, well balanced with a long, persistent finish.
Carefully cellaring this wine for the next 5-10 years will enable further development and integration of the ripe and intense fruit flavours it has come to be known for.
The blocks showing exceptional class and intensity are earmarked as potential components of the Jacob’s Creek Johann Shiraz Cabernet, so that they could be afforded the best possible treatment at the winery. Harvesting takes place from mid to late March for Shiraz and during mid April for Cabernet Sauvignon.
Full depth crimson colour. The bouquet is rich and complex, showing a harmonious blend of ripe blackberry and spicy black pepper characters from Shiraz and refined, briary fruits from Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by cedary vanilla oak. The palate is dense, with layers of concentrated, stylish fruit flavour seamlessly integrated with stylish and attractive oak; full bodied in structure with intense, fine yet soft tannins, carrying the fruit to a long, rounded finish.
The grapes for Jacaranda Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon were sourced from the very best Coonawarra vineyard sites, picked at optimum flavour ripeness following repeated vineyard inspections by the winemakers. Each individual vineyard parcel was destemed into small static fermenters and inoculated with a neutral yeast strain to maximise the expression of varietal Cabernet Sauvignon fruit.
An iconic example of a Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. Still youthful on release, this wine will reward the patient by revealing its true potential over the next 15 to 20 years. We recommend that this wine be decanted before serving for best results.
