On the southern boundary of Coonawarra is the old Penola cricket ground, which first saw a ball bowled in anger and the flashing cover drives of the local champions in 1950. Sadly, the ground closed in 1996. Soon after Jim Barry purchased the 30 acre property and planted a Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard.
These aromas are full of complexity - offering senses of cedar, mint and eucalypt. The palate is overwhelmingly satisfying, hinting the Hallmark cabernet characters of cassis, menthol and satsuma plum. The tannins are integrated and well structured. With a long and balanced finish, this wine shows fi nesse and elegance. ‘The Cover Drive’ has been crafted to be enjoyed upon release with a view to medium term cellaring under the correct conditions.
Wynns Coonawarra Estate was the first winery to be established in Coonawarra, by John Riddoch in 1896. The winery is located on the world famous strip of 'Terra Rossa' soil that produces fruit of an exceptionally high quality.
First produced in 1981, Wynns Coonawarra Estate Chardonnay demonstrates that Coonawarra can produce fine whites as well as fine reds. As a young wine Wynns Coonawarra Estate Chardonnay typically displays melon, fig and citrus fruit flavours while brief oak maturation offers subtle notes, playing a supportive role.
The Shiraz variety has long thrived in Coonawarra and comprises the oldest vines in our vineyard. Their traditional spicy, peppery and blackcurrant flavours have been enhanced by ageing in predominantly French oak to create this harmonious wine of great volume and depth.
Dark cherry red with purple hues. Chocolate and spice and all things nice, this wine has aromas of cinnamon, vanilla cigarbox, and cedar with lifted fruit sweetness. There is a deep dark fruit concentration that flows onto the palate as being juicy and fleshy. The tannins are soft and round with cocoa-like texture, peppery flavour and raspberry sweetness. This wine is a friend indeed, being rich and generous. Produced from 35 year-old vines in a generous vintage, the Rymill Coonawarra Shiraz has great concentration and complexity, and will continue to develop beautifully with time in the bottle.
The grapes for Jacaranda Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon were sourced from the very best Coonawarra vineyard sites, picked at optimum flavour ripeness following repeated vineyard inspections by the winemakers. Each individual vineyard parcel was destemed into small static fermenters and inoculated with a neutral yeast strain to maximise the expression of varietal Cabernet Sauvignon fruit.
An iconic example of a Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. Still youthful on release, this wine will reward the patient by revealing its true potential over the next 15 to 20 years. We recommend that this wine be decanted before serving for best results.
Winemakers made regular visits to the vineyards throughout the ripening process. Only those vineyards displaying all the regional and varietal hallmarks of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon were nominated for inclusion in this blend. The parcels of fruit were machine harvested and delivered to the winery. The fruit from each individual vineyard was kept separate, in order to retain vineyard identity and to provide blending options at a later stage during wine making.
Classic Coonawarra regional characters extend to the palate, with vibrant cassis flavours well integrated with fine and persistent fruit tannins, which provide length and structure.
