Mt Barker is also located inland and is the coolest sub-region in Western Australia. The climate is Mediterranean but there is lower humidity and more sunshine than at Frankland River. The marri soils provide perfect drainage.
This sub-region produces world-class wines that win many awards. Mt Barker wines are showcased at the annual Grapes and Gallops Wine Festival, held in association with the Mungrup Sprint horse racing event in early January.
The most sought after wines produced are Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Other varieties produced include Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot.
