The Shiraz grape tends to be used as a great backbone for many variations of blending Red Wines. Having added varieties like Cabenet, Grenache, Mataro, Tempranillo, Viogner we get what is easily titled Shiraz Blends.
Introducing the Fifth Leg Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot, which provides serious wine in a fun package. Shiraz provides the backbone to this wine with plenty of plum, pepper and spice. Cabernet Sauvignon delivers dark cherry and blackberry fruit, with nice grippy tannins, while Merlot fills out the mid-palate with plenty of juicy, fleshy red fruits.
Vineyard Region: From Western Australia, sourced from the Geographe and Margaret River regions.
Vintage Conditions: A very wet winter was a welcome beginning for the 2009 vintage. Hail in spring damaged budburst while warmer conditions during summer saw harvest occur earlier than anticipated, but ripening slowed in late March and early April. The overall crop was down approximately 20% but overall quality was very pleasing.
Grape Variety: Shiraz (55%), Cabernet Sauvignon (30%), Merlot (15%).
Maturation: Parcels of this wine were matured in seasoned French oak barrels for 12 months to add spice and complexity, while unoaked parcels were kept to lift the wine's vibrant, fresh fruit flavours.
Colour: Deep red with a solid core.
Nose: Very inviting - bright and fresh. It's lifted and full of berries - raspberries, blueberries, cherries and spice. Further complexity comes from spicy French oak.
Palate: The palate shows soft and lush flavours with persistent red and blueberry characters supported by a fine tannin structure. The finish displays lovely length and a harmonious fruit and oak balance.
