Widely planted in Australia, Chardonnay produces rich, flavoursome wines in warm climates and more complex wines with finesse in cooler climates. Generally fermented or aged in oak but unwooded styles are also popular.
Fruit for the Heemskerk Chardonnay is sourced from Tolpuddle vineyard in the Coal River Valley. It's a north-east facing site with 19 year old vines on the upper slope of the vineyard. The fruit is hand picked before being whole bunch pressed, with fermentation taking place in 100% French oak barrels.The wine remained on lees in barrel with regular stirring to add complexity, palate weight and texture.
Pale straw with a deep green hue. Very lifted, complex and layered. Aromas of fresh macadamia, orange blossom and red apple skin. Elegant, pure, textured and concentrated. Flavours of creamy, spicy oak are balanced with fruity notes of guava, toasted nuts and peach stone, which are carried by an intense textured quality. The wine is creamy, yet grainy and pure. It's tight and elongated with river pebble-like acidity. Balance, length, intensity and concentration really are the key components to this wine.
