This variety also sometimes called Petite Syrah, is rich and full bodied with intense colour, dark berry fruits and satsuma plum flavours and firm but supple tannins. This variety thrives in Australia’s warm sunny climate.

The Durif grape variety was developed by a French nurseryman breeder, Dr. Durif, it is a hybrid form of the Shiraz grape crossed with the peloursin grape variety. The Durif variety was grown in the lower Hermitage area of France, and sourced from there by Francois de Castella, the Victorian Viticulturist, in about 1908, when a replanting program with grafted root stocks was underway after the scourge of phylloxera. Durif was planted in the Morris vineyards in 1920, initially used for fortified wine production. It wasn’t until 1954 that Mick Morris produced the first Dry Red table wine.
The grapes were harvested either by hand or machine in the cool of the morning, and delivered to the winery for crushing into open fermenters. The average harvest baumé was just over 14.0°. The skins were headed down (submerged) into the fermenting juice for colour extraction from the skins. The fermentation on skins was carefully monitored for six to seven days prior to pressing using a basket press. The wine was matured in four year old French hogsheads and allowed to mature for 16 months prior to bottling.
The colour is deep red with vibrant purple overtones. The bouquet displays ripe spicy fruit of plum and violets complexed with integrated oak. This full bodied wine with rich generous plum fruit flavours integrated with fruit and oak tannins providing texture and structure with a great flavour persistence. A wine typical of the Morris Durif style, full bodied with rich flavours and mouth feel. This wine is enjoyable young with rich fruit concentration but does show all the hallmarks to cellar well for many years to come.
