The Belle Epoque cuvée expresses a particular style of eleganceand finesse. The epitome of pleasure, Perrier-Jouët’s Belle Epoque is the product of a two-hundred-year-old House, founded on Epernay’s avenuede Champagne, and its superlative vineyards – some 65 hectares rated at 99.2% on the region’s quality scale. People still talk of Perrier-Jouët’s 1874 vintage cuvée, which reached unprecedented price levels at Christie’s first champagne auction in 1885.
The wine has a light yellow shade tinged with green, pointing to the presence of Chardonnays. The nose opens with whiteflower aromas, moving on to reveal honeyed notes and a biscuity, brioche finish. The Pinot Noir influence lends the wine backbone without masking its suppleness, preserving the cuvée’s appealing lightness. In the mouth, the taste is clean and clear with touches of almond and nougat. This is a light, delicate wine with an easily discerned charm and a surprisingly long finish. Tastings of the 2002 wines revealed Chardonnays that were delicate, distinctive and elegant with floral and fruit aromas (citrus and exotic fruit). The young wines also had body,depth and a long finish. Traditionally, the blend contains a high proportion of Chardonnay from the Grands Cruson the Côte des Blancs, such as Cramant and Avize. The Pinots Noirs showed themselves to be light and fruity, a natural fit for the Belle Epoque blend, with wines from the best areas of the Montagne de Reims, like Mailly. The unmistakable charm that is the hallmark of the House can be clearly detected. A dosage of only 8 grams was added to allow all of the cuvée’s natural subtlety to come through. The Belle Epoque Vintage 2002 has been matured for at least five years in Perrier-Jouët’s historic chalk cellars, fulfilling its promise as a fine, aged champagne.
