The most common form of blending red wine in Australia is by using Cabernet, Shiraz and Merlot. Each variety of grape creating different depth of flavour and texture to the final product.

Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Shiraz Merlot is a fine example of the style. Wynns Cabernet Shiraz Merlot is a rich and complex wine with enhanced softness derived from the blending of these three classic red grape varieties. Its soft fruit plus judicious oak handling is well balanced and has created a wine perfect for current drinking or short-term cellaring, reflecting its regionality. The first Wynns red blend (a Cabernet Sauvignon - Shiraz or "Hermitage as Shiraz was referred to then) was produced in 1969.
A dark opaque hue with a bright violet / purple rim. This wine shows an inviting succulent nose of bright red berries and dark blood plums. The generous lifted fruit aromas of Shiraz combined with the darker spectrum of Cabernet and Merlot marry well to add complexity and intrigue. This is a generous wine showing ripe cassis, blood plums and brambly fruits. The blend of varieties meld to produce a supple, soft palate with seamless length and multi dimensional depth. The fine grained tannins are well integrated and supported by silky stylish oak.

Whilst I have not been a great fan of Wynns red stripe in the past. I recently putchased a 6pk of this latest release 2008. It is without doubt the best I have tried! They got the blend just right this time. Excellent depth of fruit with length and structure. Quality wise it's easily worth $15+
